Multiple Competitive Divisions

Your audition(s) will determine which division(s) you are eligible to compete in.

 Awards will be given for the highest scores in each division and for highest cumulative Popular + Classical at Levels 2 & 3 

(Note: Only those competing in Level 3 Popular and Classical divisions are eligible to win "World Champion" title)

LEVEL 1 POPULAR: Pre-Recorded Accompaniment 

LEVEL 2 POPULAR: Pre-Recorded Accompaniment 

LEVEL 2 CLASSICAL: Pre-Recorded Accompaniment 

LEVEL 3 POPULAR: Live Band Accompaniment (World Exclusive)

LEVEL 3 CLASSICAL: Pre-Recorded Accompaniment 

SELF-ACCOMPANIMENT/HIKIFUKI: One whistler accompanying themselves with their instrument such as guitar, keyboard, etc. *Classical, Popular, or Original compositions - All levels

ALLIED ARTS: Whistling combined with another performing art or artist(s) such as singing, bands, dancing, duets etc. *Classical, Popular, or Original compositions - All levels

 

Three Levels of Competition

 Your audition(s) will determine which levels of competition you qualify for. 

  • LEVEL 3: Those who qualify MUST compete in Level 3 Popular & Classical divisions. Only those competing in LEVEL 3 are eligible to win the award of "World Champion."

    • 2 songs will be performed during live competition​

  • LEVEL 2: Those who qualify are eligible to compete in Level 2 Popular and Classical divisions. These contestants will compete with other LEVEL 2 whistlers for LEVEL 2 awards.

    • Some will qualify to perform only 1 song (usually popular)

    • Some will qualify to perform 2 songs (pop & classical​) during live competition.

  • LEVEL 1: Those who qualify are eligible to compete in LEVEL 1 Popular division. These contestants will compete with other LEVEL 1 whistlers for the the LEVEL 1 award.

    • Only 1 song may be performed during live competition.

  • ALL LEVELS may qualify for Self-Accompaniment/Hikifuki and Allied Arts.

    • 1 song per division​

 

 Audition Details

  1. Please read this page thoroughly before you start your Audition Application.
  2. Pre-competition audition is mandatory for all contestants.
  3. A board of audition judges will evaluate all auditions.
  4. Your audition is the first stage of competition and determines the level and division(s) you qualify for. All ages may audition to participate.
  5. You may not qualify for the level or division(s) you have qualified for in the past. Competition stage time is limited and registration is growing.
  6. You must submit one video link for each of the following in which you want to compete: If you want to compete in all areas you will submit 4 video links.
    • Popular: any compositions other than "Classical."  Country, Blues, Jazz, etc. are acceptable. If you wish to qualify for Level 3 you must use a "Western" popular music as the band will only perform European/American music.
    • Classical​: compositions written in the European tradition during a period lasting approximately from 1750-1850 when forms such as the symphony, concerto, and sonata were standardized.
    • Self-Accompaniment/Hikifuki: any composition with one whistler and their instrument such as guitar, keyboard, etc. 
    • Allied Arts: ​any composition where whistling is combined with another performing art or artist(s) such as singing, bands, dancing, duets, etc. 
  7. Video Submission Requirements:​​​​​​
    • You must record yourself whistling live to a complete song that 2-5 minutes.
    • ​Video must have been recorded within the last year.
    • Video must be submitted via online links only. YouTube or Vimeo are preferred. 

    • You will submit your video link(s), song name(s), composer(s), etc. via your online audition application.

    • Audition repertoire may be of your choosing. It is not necessary to audition with the music you are going to perform live at MMW.

    • Acapella entries are unacceptable.
    • Auto tune and/or sound effects are unacceptable.

  8. Backing tracks with minimal background vocals are acceptable for auditions. (Note: Absolutely NO vocals are allowed allowed during live competition)
    • Karaoke tracks, Music Minus One, or custom backtracks work well for audition and competition. ​
    • Itunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, etc. can be helpful. Search for "karaoke tracks" with "no vocals". 
  9. You will be notified via email of your audition results - now by June 30, 2023.
  10. You must submit $25 fee and complete the online audition application. Any late auditions that are authorized by the organizers will incur an additional processing fee.

 If You are Selected to Compete 

(See COMPETE page)

     

  1. If selected to compete, you will receive an acceptance email. You must complete the registration form and pay fees by the due date to reserve your space at the competition.

  2. All contestants must be in attendance at the Mandatory Orientation on Friday morning, September 22, 2023.

  3. LEVEL 3 contestants must attend band rehearsal on Friday, September 22, 2023 in the afternoon.
